Innovating Interior Design Concepts
Interior design is always changing. Whether it’s kitchen design, bathroom design, or anywhere else in the home, the common standards and practises for interior design shift over time to meet the changing needs of consumers. From the need for more environmentally friendly homes to changes in people’s lifestyles and living standards, the best interior designers are the ones who can keep up with these changes and meet the new challenges head-on with interesting and innovative design solutions.
Today, we’ll be taking a look at some of the ways in which modern design standards have changed and the process by which interior designers innovate fresh, new ideas.
Modern Kitchen Design
If you want a good case study for how design standards are shifting, then look no further than kitchens. A hundred years ago, all a kitchen really needed was an oven, a stove, and a sink, as well as some space to store and prepare meals. A modern kitchen design needs all of that, but space also needs to be made in order to accommodate a wide range of distinctly 20th and 21st-century gadgets.
From fridges and freezers, to steamers and air fryers, a 2023 kitchen design is, more often than not, likely to be brimming with a wide range of devices. Even a more stripped-back kitchen design will almost certainly have a toaster, an electric kettle, and a microwave, alongside the bare necessities. With all that in mind, it’s only natural that kitchens require more worktop space than ever before to accommodate this wide range of household appliances.
The Best Of Bathrooms
And kitchens aren’t the only space where the needs have shifted over time. Even in just the last few decades, bathroom designs have gone through a number of changes with many households opting to do away with the actual bath altogether and instead make do with just a shower.
This change to bathroom design standards is the result of two reasons, both of which reflect wider trends in the modern approach to interior design. The first is convenience; taking a shower is just that much faster than taking a bath, and showers take up less space. The second reason has to do with something we mentioned right at the beginning of this article and that’s the need for environmentally friendly interior solutions. Many modern bathroom designs make use of water-saving technologies in order to minimise their environmental impact.
What Does This Mean For Designers?
While these might seem like simple challenges, for designers, the need to innovate new solutions that are tailored to people’s lifestyles is the main challenge of the job. Both bathroom design and kitchen design illustrate some of the complexity this can entail but the real skill of a good designer is to meet these problems head-on and work within the constraints of a job to find the optimal solution.
