Metal is everywhere. Okay, so maybe that seems obvious, but it’s worth taking a moment to think about nonetheless. From cars to phones to even furniture, if there are two materials that are dominant in the modern world it’s metal and plastic. Now, while plastic gets most of the headlines relating to recycling and the challenges of running a large-scale recycling network, scrap metal recycling doesn’t get nearly as much attention.

That’s a little strange when you stop to think about it. After all, just like plastic, metal comes from limited resources and, just like plastic, refining new metals can have a serious impact on the environment. Despite this fact, people rarely consider just how important scrap metal recycling is to our environment and our production infrastructure as a whole.

Another thing many people don’t realise about scrap metals is that, if not disposed of properly, they can break down into hazardous chemicals and damage ecosystems. This is, in part, because many of the metals we use are alloys that don’t appear naturally in nature and when subjected to environmental processes, the result can be incredibly harmful.

Scrap metal recycling prevents this by ensuring that these metals stay in the production cycle. This also cuts down on new smelting which, in turn, drastically reduces our output of greenhouse gases.
The truth is that scrap metal recycling works and that’s why it’s here to stay. While not all metals can be returned into the production cycle, for the most part, the reason that metal doesn’t get the same bad press that plastic does is that metals aren’t the thing filling up our landfills and poisoning our oceans. That’s all thanks to scrap metal recycling.
