Disinfectants can help protect our birds from diseases such as bacterial, viral, and parasite infections. Dishes, polluted water supplies, old toys or cages, and touch with hands and clothing are all easy ways for these diseases to spread among birds.
Your bird may be exposed to a number of disease-causing and life-threatening germs if you do not follow recognised disinfection procedures. When you bring a new bird home, not only should it be quarantined, but all of the items it came with should be disinfected as well. When going home from bird shows, more caution should be exercised because disease-causing chemicals can readily be picked up on your hands, clothing, or shoes and brought home with you.
First and foremost, cleaning and disinfection are two distinct processes. Cleaning eliminates filth and the majority of germs. Even if objects “appear” clean after cleaning, germs are still present. The process of killing microorganisms is known as disinfection.
Disinfectants
Disinfectants are chemical agents that have been registered with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the majority of disinfectants are not safe for birds. It is critical to choose a disinfectant with care.

Bleach (Sodium Hypochlorite) is a good disinfectant, but it also produces chlorine gas, which is irritating to the lungs. When your birds are moved to a different room in the house, bleach should be used. They shouldn’t be put back in their cage until it’s entirely dry and the room is adequately ventilated.
Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE) is a non-toxic, natural cleanser and anti-bacterial agent that can be applied on food processing surfaces and cages without causing harm. GSE is available at your local health food store or online and has been shown to be effective against strep, staph, Chlamydia, salmonella, E. Coli, influenza, parasites, fungi, and a variety of viruses.
